While working around your yard in the summer months, you may want to tackle a few projects that will save you some money. Instead of going out and replacing exterior items that aren't as bright and shiny as they used to be, refinish them! If you have some aluminum items around your home that you would like to make look new again, they can be cleaned up and polished using sandpaper. The technique is a bit tedious, but worth it. A little bit of elbow grease and some sandpaper can give you a new mirror finish. Just follow the steps below to learn how to polish aluminum with sandpaper.
Things You'll Need
- Rubber gloves
- Safety goggles
- Paint stripper
- Sandpaper of different grits, from coarse to very fine
Put on your rubber gloves and goggles and begin to remove any clear coat or lacquer with the stripper.
Begin sanding your aluminum with a very strong sandpaper. Sand out any scratches or imperfections until you are left with a smooth finish.
Next, switch to a smaller grit sandpaper, and sand in the OPPOSITE direction from the one you were sanding in before.
Continue to lower the grit until your aluminum is completely smooth and the sanded item looks the way you want it.
Finish with a super-fine sandpaper to achieve that mirror finish!
Tips & Warnings
- You can try wetting the sandpaper; sometimes this speeds up the process!
- During the stripping process, it is very important to wear your rubber gloves and safety goggles.
