Step 1
Visit your health care provider. Tell your physician your medical history and let him know how important it is that you have a motorized wheelchair. If you have less-than-ideal strength for a standard wheelchair, you may be a good candidate for a physician to recommend that you obtain a motorized wheelchair.
-
Step 2
Have your physician request that your medical insurance pay for a motorized wheelchair for you. Be patient, as this step sometimes can take a few weeks.
-
Step 3
Request information from several different motorized wheelchair companies. These companies often will send representatives to your home to show you how the wheelchairs work and how they can help you. Determine which of these motorized wheelchairs best suits your specific needs.
-
Step 4
Check from which motorized wheelchair companies your health insurance will allow you to make a purchase. There may be very specific rules for this, and you may have to pay a deductible to obtain your motorized wheelchair.
-
Step 5
Buy a motorized wheelchair on your own. Selecting from the companies that you obtained information from in Step 3, order your motorized wheelchair and pay for it out of your own pocket.
