Instructions

    • 1

Do a scissors kick in the upright position. This is the same kick used during the sidestroke only upright. Just open and closing your legs in what looks like a pair of scissors.

    • 2

Transform the kick into a circle kick by rotating each leg slightly as you close them. Just rotate one leg slightly as you bring the legs closed, and do the same with the other.

    • 3

Rotate one leg counter clockwise, pushing water down and towards the center of your body to propel yourself upwards. As the first leg rotates past your center, begin to rotate the other leg counterclockwise towards your body. This creates thrust to hold you up.

    • 4

Push water with your legs in an eggbeater motion, alternating one rotation with another. As one leg passes your other knee bring your other leg around and continue. This keeps you up in the water and is another way to tread water.

    • 5

Maintain the circle kick. Use your arms at first to make it easier for you and then slowly stop using one arm, then the next, until you can hold both of your arms above your head and tread water--without using your arms!

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice these two kicks whenever you get the chance. Always remember that the circle kick makes use of both legs, each one rotating after the other one. Mastering the scissor kick is the first step and an important one. Slower is always better as you don't need a lot of power to keep afloat.

  • Perform this only in shallow water first before you try it in deeper water. Don't panic and tense up because that makes treading water more difficult.
