Do your rat's eyes look goopy or crusty? It may have conjunctivitis. Know the symptoms to look for so that you can get the proper medication and restore your rat to health.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for "goop" in and around the eyes: clear, cloudy, or yellowish.

  2. Step 2

Look for "crustiness" around the eyes.

  3. Step 3

Look for redness or swelling in or around the eyes, or in the eyelids.

  4. Step 4

Notice if your rat is rubbing its eyes or nose a lot. Also check for sneezing.

  5. Step 5

Notice any red residue around the eyes or nose. This is not blood--it is a waxy substance produced by glands in the skin. The glands produce this substance when the rat is under some kind of stress. The stress could simply be that you have not cleaned the cage for a while and the ammonia has built up and is irritating the eyes.

  6. Step 6

If your rat has one or more of these symptoms, you may need to treat your rat's conjunctivitis.
