Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Transportation to New York City if you don't already live there
- Dedication to shopping
Step1
Go to Saint Mark's Place. The East Village is home to a number of Japanese shops, restaurants and businesses. There are numerous Japanese supermarkets, including the well-known and longstanding Sunrise Mart, JAS Mart and a plethora of other Japanese businesses. Not only are there Japanese bakeries and supermarkets, there are also Japanese vintage clothing shops! This area is a must-see for anyone looking for a bit of Japan in New York City.
Step2
Visit Forest Hills in Queens. Forest Hills has a rather large Japanese expatriate population, and there are a good amount of Japanese businesses and shops to show for it. Japanese groceries and goods are not hard to find, with good Samurai shops and small Asian-oriented grocers in the area.
Step3
Visit Mitsuwa. Mitsuwa is technically located in Fort Lee, New Jersey, but it is a rather short bus ride away from central Manhattan. In fact, Penn Station has a shuttle bus that drops shoppers off directly in front of Mitsuwa for a day of Japanese shopping. Not only does Mitsuwa sell every type of Japanese food under the sun, there is also a good amount of other items, including clothes, household items, beauty items and toys. This is truly a Japanese shopping paradise and only a short bus ride away from the center of Manhattan.
Step4
Go to Katagiri. Located right by Bloomingdales on the Upper East Side, this Japanese business (originally called Katagiri Brothers) has been around since the early twentieth century. With a great selection of Japanese groceries, this place cannot be beat. The ready-made sushi is also excellent, and the items are always fresh. There is also a Japanese stationery and goods shop located right next to the market. This is a great place to go to find a good selection of Japanese goods in New York City.
Step5
Stop by M2M supermarket. Located in the East Village, this Pan-Asian supermarket has a great selection of Japanese goods (along with Chinese and Korean items as well). If you're looking for a quick place to grab from Pocky or some "daifuku (Japanese confections) this is the place to be. Happy shopping!
