How to Get Out of a Class Dissection
So, you don't want to dissect a frog or cat. Your school may require the dissection of a cat for biology, or frog dissection may be necessary for basic science. You have every right to object to this. Many feel that it is wrong to dissect animals. Those heavily into animal rights definitely are against dissections in schools. Here's how you can get out of it.

1
Arm yourself with the facts. Visit the PETA website to learn about biology and dissection.
-
2
Print out some of the facts from the website, and study them carefully. Make sure to bring the papers with you for added effect when talking to others about your beliefs.
-
-
3
Keep a journal over your crusade-against-dissection journey. You can decorate it with stickers from PETA, or you can create designs of your own.
-
4
Try talking to the teacher. Bring along your facts, and express your beliefs clearly. Try not to get emotional about it. You want to make an intelligent plea based upon facts. If you have a tender heart, coming at someone with tears in your eyes and heart comes off as unprofessional. Some may even think you are faking it. Keep it simple, and express your ideas thoroughly.
-
5
Offer an alternative. It's not like you do not need the information that will be taught by the visual aid of dissecting. You do need the information, but there are many kind alternatives to dissection. Let the teacher know that you are willing to do extra credit work, and explain that you will commit to learning all that others are learning with the visual aid.
-
6
Go to the principal if the teacher will not listen to reason. Approach the principal in much the same way that you did the teacher. It's alright to be a bit more aggressive and strong in your beliefs now. The principal is going to be aware that there is a problem, and he is likely trying to keep things from getting out of control. If you express your dismay and anger, do so respectfully. Acknowledge that your frustration is not his fault. You are upset over how your beliefs were swept aside.
-
7
Try the school board if your school is not cooperating with you. You should never put up with a bad grade for having a kind heart. Be firm, and explain exactly what happened. Review your journal, and point out all the ways in which you were wronged. Nobody wants a violated student to passionately pursue the school or board.

Go to the press if none of this is working out. You have every right to stand up for your very own rights.
