It’s time to go to the bathroom, yet again. It seems like you are going every 10 minutes, and when you do, it sure does hurt! If you have ever been in this situation, then you have experienced a urine infection. A urinary infection, often called a urinary tract infection, bladder infection, UTI, or cystitis, needs to be treated quickly because it can lead to a kidney infection. While you are waiting to see your doctor, there are some things you can do at home to help your body heal.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Water
  • Cranberry juice
  • Cotton underwear
  • Acidophilus
  • Vitamin C

How to Treat a Urine Infection

Step1
Call your doctor to make an appointment. You will probably need an antibiotic to treat the condition and cure it completely.
Step2
Add cranberry juice to your daily diet. Drink 100% cranberry juice, not the cocktails that are diluted with sugar. Drink about a quart a day.
Step3
Stay hydrated. Drink as much water as you can, and try to drink a cup of water every hour. Water will help flush out the infection.
Step4
Take extra Vitamin C and add acidophilus to your daily diet. These will help your immune system as you fight the infection. Also, the acidophilus helps counteract the negative effects of the antibiotic. For instance, many people get yeast infections while on antibiotics, but acidophilus keeps these at bay.
Step5
Avoid tobacco, as smoking is known to cause urinary tract infections. Avoid caffeine as well.
Step6
Do not have sex or drink alcohol while treating the bladder infection. Again, these can make the infection worse.
Step7
Take all of the prescribed medication, even if your symptoms disappear quickly. The antibiotics your doctor prescribes may remove your symptoms after a couple of days, but if you do not complete the round of medication, you will likely get reinfected.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you get frequent urine infections, try to increase your water intake. Dehydration can cause UTIs.
  • Women often get urine infections, but men can get them too. Sometimes doctors will do extra tests on men with UTIs to make sure there is not a more serious condition causing the infection.
  • Never self-treat a urine infection without contacting a doctor. Without antibiotics, these easily develop into kidney infections. These ideas are simply for you to use along with your doctor's prescribed medications.
