To get married abroad, couples need to plan ahead and make arrangements that are easy to do once arriving at the destination. Destinations abroad are always romantic and honeymoons are reimbursable. Marrying abroad does require some additional steps from getting married at home, but it costs less and the honeymoon is included. Couples need only to follow a few steps to marry abroad.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Identification
  • Any divorce documents
  • Passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Death certificate if widowed

Step1
Agree on the destination for the wedding and make reservations early. Hire a wedding planner to help with the details leading up to the wedding. Long-distance planning is hard. A wedding planner can take care of the things that need immediate attention.
Step2
Before leaving home, secure all documents that are needed to marry. This includes a birth certificate, divorce decrees, passport, photo identification and a document stating that each person is indeed single.
Step3
Arrive early enough to apply for the marriage license and talk about the final changes for the wedding with the wedding planner. Every destination has a different waiting period. Proof of marital status documentation, divorce and passports must be presented along with photo identification and a birth certificate. Single persons should have some type of document stating they were never married before. If widowed, a death certificate is needed.
Step4
After filing all the paperwork and presenting the documentation all that is left is to talk with the wedding planner and rehearse the wedding before the actual day
Step5
The day of the wedding, present the documentation and license to the person performing the ceremony and say the vows.

Tips & Warnings

  • Civil ceremonies are scheduled when couples apply for the marriage license.
  • Church weddings will need to be schedules months ahead of time with the church.
  • Register the marriage license with the local municipal office once arriving home.
