How to Design a Video Game Online

There are millions of video games on the Internet that are popular, and many of them were made by regular people. Designing and creating a video game online actually doesn't take a whole lot of work because of the technology that is now available. Many websites allow their users to create free games right on the web without knowing a single coding program or designing program. Most of the programs where one can design a video game online are drag-and-drop.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to one of the many free game creators and designer programs that are available on the internet by typing a site into your browser.

    • 2

Begin the video game design and creation application by pressing the "Start" option or "create game" option with your mouse.

    • 3

Create good-guys and enemies in your game by choosing the option to do so in the game designer program. Most of the free game designer programs will have pre-made characters so all that is involved is clicking on one of the pre-made good-guys and enemies that the game creator will allow you to choose.

    • 4

Place your hero and enemy game characters in a scene of your choosing by clicking on the "Scene" or "world" option. For example, in the Microsoft Popfly Game Creator this can be done by selecting the "Scene" tab.

    • 5

Give the heroes and enemies that you created behaviors, such as shooting, running, and jumping, and the ability to interact in the game by choosing the "move" or behavior option and selecting one of the pre-coded game behaviors of the program. Repeat this process for each your enemy and hero you've created and give them both the number of desired behaviors you want.

    • 6

Create "Won" and "Game Over" endings to your game by choosing the pre-coded options and scene change behaviors in the game design and creator program. This will often involve placing a scene change in the game when the number of enemies in the game has been reduced to zero or when a time limit has ended. For example, the Popfly game creator will allow you set your "won" and "game over" endings through choosing the "Scene Change" behavior option and clicking the "won" or "game over" option.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the first couple of games you try to make very simple. Move on to trying to create bigger and more fun video games later when you've had practice with the game designer and creator.

  • Consider taking one or two actual video game design and coding courses at a college or educational program so you can better understand what the pre-coded instructions of an online game creator is actually doing.
