Instructions

    • 1

Remove blinds from window. Using a step stool or a ladder if needed, take the metal blinds out of the brackets they hang from. You may need to slide out a plastic piece from each bracket in order to get the blinds down.

    • 2

Place metal blinds into the bathtub. If they are narrow enough, put the blinds into the tub lengthwise and let them out so the loosened slats will soak up more of the bleach solution. Otherwise, place the metal blinds in the tub the way they fit best.

    • 3

Fill the tub with water. Turn on the faucets and create a flow strong of hot water. Use the flip lever or a rubber stopper to plug up the tub so the liquid doesn't drain out, and fill the tub about halfway.

    • 4

Add Clorox bleach to the water. Wear rubber gloves to protect your skin and measure out 2 cups of bleach. Pour the bleach into the water and agitate the water slightly with your hand so that the Clorox mixes in well. Scrub the slats with a soft brush to loosen dust and dirt, and then allow the metal blinds to soak in the mixture for two hours.

    • 5

Drain the dirty water. Allow all of the water to drain out, re-plug the bathtub and refill with hot water. Let the blinds soak another 15 minutes to remove any leftover dirt and residue. Let out all of the water once again.

    • 6

Let the blinds air-dry. Hang up the blinds in a place where the dripping water will not damage the floor or furniture, such as outside on a clothesline or over a shower curtain rod. Alternately, you can lay the blinds on a thick towel. Once dry, you can use a clean, lint-free cloth to remove any lingering water spots before re-hanging the metal blinds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash your hands thoroughly after using bleach.

  • Only use Clorox on metal or plastic blinds.

  • Do not use Clorox on colored blinds, as it will remove the dye or paint.

  • Avoid touching your skin or eyes when using bleach.
