In all professions, there is always more to learn and discover what will make you better. The point of attending acting class is to become a better thespian. This means you should be improving with every class. It doesn't simply happen on its own. You need to work to see improvements. Read on to learn how to improve in acting class.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Motivation
  • Material
  • An acting class

Step1
Listen carefully throughout the entire class. Sometimes, it can be easy to zone out when you aren't on stage. You can learn as much, if not more, by listening to the instruction given to other people. Take the energy needed to focus yourself on your instructor's critiques of other actors in class.
Step2
Watch other actors in class. As an actor, you should observe other people. When you watch scenes in class, take note of what works well and what doesn't. Learn from the mistakes and successes of others.
Step3
Rehearse outside of class. Acting class should not be the only time when you work on your craft. Depending on the type of acting class you are in, you may have homework. Work diligently on this assignment, whether it means memorizing your lines or rehearsing your scene with your partner. If you are in a cold reading class or a similar session that doesn't give homework, run your own acting exercises outside of class. Pick up a scene and work on it for five minutes. See how quickly you can perform the scene well.
Step4
Do not be afraid to fail in class. An acting class is a safe environment where you can try new things and grow as an artist. Do not be concerned with always being perfect or doing well in class. Try something new, stretch yourself and do not let fear stop you.
Step5
Talk with your acting teacher before or after class if you feel you are having a particular issue. He may be able to give you more tailored advice and tips to help you.
Step6
Keep an open mind during each class. If you come to class with prior judgments, you'll be less likely to learn.
Step7
Listen carefully to all feedback the instructor gives you. Take physical or strong mental notes so you don't forget the critiques after they are given. Try to implement the feedback into your future performances.
Step8
Leave your ego at the door when you enter acting class. Defensiveness will get you nowhere. Try not to take constructive criticism personally. Everyone is there to learn in an acting class and everyone has room for improvement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to have fun during class. Often, when you are having fun, the audience is too.
  • If you feel like you aren't getting anything out of your class after several classes, it may just not be the right class for you. Before committing to a particular acting school, try to audit classes at various locations and then choose the one that feels right for you.
