How to Propagate an Ivy with Cuttings

Cuttings are pieces of plants that, when removed, can still grow into their own individual plants. This process is called propagating.   • Ivy plant
  • Knife
  • Commercial rooting hormone powder
  • Small plastic bag

      Choose a healthy ivy plant to take the cuttings from. Pinch an ivy stem with your fingers or remove a stem with a sharp, sterile knife. Your cutting should be a healthy stem and leaf with no brown or torn edges.

      Dip ivy cuttings into commercial rooting hormone powder. Be sure to cover the newly cut stem end entirely.

      Place cut stem into pot filled with soil.

      Insert wooden dowels into soil on either side of cutting.

      Place plastic bag loosely over stems and pot to ensure proper circulation.

      Check plant daily to ensure soil is moist. The plant should root within 2 to 3 weeks.
