    How to Write Lyrics

  1. Step 1

Think about what you want to write about. You can write lyrics that reflect your views on relationships, love, family, life, or anything you choose. Give yourself time to decide what you want your lyrics to be about.

  2. Step 2

Know how to apply different poetic devices and make your words paint a picture through the use of metaphors, similes, descriptive language, rhyme, and emotion. Your lyrics should engage your audience or readers.

  3. Step 3

Be creative and original. You don’t have to pattern your lyrics after anyone else. What makes lyric writing so interesting is the many points of view people can write from. You don’t want what you write to just mimic what someone else is saying. Write from your own experiences and beliefs.

  4. Step 4

Write to music if you’re writing song lyrics. While it’s not mandatory to write to a particular melody, it can be helpful to hear the melody and then write your song lyrics. When writing to already existing music, you can write your lyrics to fit that particular tune.

  5. Step 5

Learn to structure your lyrics. Song structures usually consists of verses, a chorus, and a bridge. Lyrics for poetry can be written in a variety of structures or you can choose to write free verse.

  6. Step 6

Read or sing your lyrics aloud and make changes if you need to. Song lyrics should fit with the music you’re singing them too. While poetry can be any length, you still want your words to flow in some type of rhythm.

  7. Step 7

Keep practicing your lyric writing. You might not like some of the lyrics you write at first but don’t let that discourage you. The more you write the better you will get.
