Step 1
The cockatiel is a member of the cockatoo family and is native to Australia. It has a slender body, approx. 14", pointed crest, and orange-red cheeks. Mutations have created color combinations of white, yellow, and gray. Cockatiels are a popular cage bird.
-
Step 2
Cockatiels love to be stroked and held. They love to sit on your shoulder and will cuddle up to your neck. They need at least an hour of interaction every day. They can be taught to imitate whistles and even whistle a tune. With patience, they can learn to speak. Cockatiels live to be 20-30 years old, so they are a long term commitment.
-
Step 3
The cockatiel diet consists of seed or pellets, fruits, veggies, eggs, and yes, chicken, just to name a few. They need a cuttle bone or mineral block at all times as well as high calcium grit. They are messy eaters and should have their cage cleaned daily as well as their food containers.
-
Step 4
Their cage needs to be at least 18"W x 22"L x 18"H. Cockatiels love to stretch their wings, so they need ample room. Provide perches of different widths to keep their feet healthy. Cockatiels need toys. Be prepared to move the toys around and to change the toys often to keep the bird interested.
-
Step 5
When choosing a cockatiel, look for clear, bright eyes; clean, smooth feathers; droppings that are not runny; an active disposition. Be prepared to pay anywhere from $100-$200 for a bird. The cage will run $50-$100.

on 8/26/2008 Hookbill parrots, such as cockatiels, hull their seeds and therefore, do not need grit in their diet.

on 6/26/2008 When buying a Cockatiel, is it better to buy two for company. Especially if you are working?
