The drum roll is one of the most common fills in percussion.There are several different types of drum rolls that one can play. One of the more basic drum rolls is the 6-stroke drum roll. As the name suggests, the roll is played with six strokes. Learning how to play a - stroke roll is fairly simple and straight-forward, and can be relied on thereafter as a consistent component to your playing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drumsticks or rods
  • Drum
  1. Step 1

    Select either drumsticks or rods to play the 4-stroke roll. For a more quieter, crisper sound, choose drumsticks. For a stronger, more bold sound, select rods. Brushes are not suggested when playing rolls.

  2. Step 2

    Strike the drum with your right stick, allowing it to get a few extra hits in by holding it loosely.

  3. Step 3

    Strike the drum with your left stick, allowing it to get a few extra hits in by holding it loosely.

  4. Step 4

    Repeat Step 2.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat Step 3.

  6. Step 6

    Repeat Step 2.

  7. Step 7

    Repeat Step 3.

Tips & Warnings
  • Play these hits on the drum head quickly in order to make it a roll.
  • You can also play the 6-stroke drum roll by playing two hits with your right stick, followed by two hits by your left, followed by a single hit first from your right stick, then your left.
  • You can also play the 6 stroke drum roll by playing all six hits with one stick, either your right or left. This should be done only by expert players, as it is more difficult.
