How to Start a Knit Row
Making the initial row in knitting is referred to as casting on. The first few times that you attempt to cast on may not meet your expectations of knitting but, as with any new task, you must try and try again. Follow these helpful directions in casting on to knit your project.

1
Hold yarn. Make an "L" with your left hand. Position the yarn to "hook" around your index finger and thumb. This position alone will take a lot of practice. Make sure that there is approximately 18 inches of yarn hanging off of your thumb. Hold both ends of yarn under your other three fingers to keep it out of the way. Do not pull tight on to the yarn.

2
Hold needle. Hold the knitting needle with your right hand. Put the needle on top of the yarn that is between your thumb and finger.

3
Create a loop. Loop the needle around and under the yarn in front of your thumb. Next, loop the needle around and under the yarn in front of your index finger.
-
4
Form the foundation. Bring the needle down through the yarn loop around your thumb. Move your thumb out of the way and pull both ends of the yarn until the loops around the needle are snug. You should have two stitches on your needle. In the process of casting on to your needle, make sure that all of the loops are even on the underside of your needle.

Follow instructions. When following a pattern, the first step in the pattern will tell you how many stitches to cast on. This will determine the size of your project.
