A sabermetrician is an statistical analyst of baseball. Becoming one can seem like a daunting task, however, many people already intuitively understand the basics of such analysis without understanding they understand. I have a headache. Anyway, follow these steps and you will be able to impress your friends with some solid knowledge.

1. Enjoy baseball or numbers--or both. Sabermetrics is the statistical analysis of baseball, implying a required interest in either or both of these aspects.

2. Ask questions about different game aspects. Was that the right reliever to bring in? The right player to start against this specific pitcher? Was he really a 15-7 pitcher?

3. Studies and analyses begin with a question and follow up with an investigation. Without an initial question like the ones in Step 2, what is being studied?

4. Learn the work of others. Chances are, ideas you develop have been tackled numerous times before. It will save embarrassment if you know before conducting an in-depth study.

5. Understand not just that general stats are poor barometers, but that there are reasons behind their invalidities.

6. Analyze objectively; be it on a blog, for a fantasy league or even just for fun, all sabermetrics requires is a question to investigate. Investigating that question is all that separates analysts from the casual fans who brush it aside.
