Instructions

    • 1

Run the sump pump to make sure that it is running properly. Allow it to drain as much water as it can from the pit, then unplug it or disconnect the battery.

    • 2

Disconnect the pipe just below the check valve using your screwdriver. Then, carefully lift the pump out of the sump pump pit.

    • 3

Hold the pump over a garbage can and press the check valve. This will release the water in the pump. If you cannot press the valve with your finger, use the screwdriver.

    • 4

Remove and wash the top of the valve to remove the dirt. Reconnect it before moving to the next step.

    • 5

Put on the rubber gloves and use your hands and the small plastic cup to remove the dirt and grime that is on the bottom of the sump pump pit. You will probably need to lay on the floor to do this. Dump the debris into the garbage can, and make sure you get all of it.

    • 6

Put the pump back into the pit, reconnect it, and check it by filling it with water using the garden hose. If it turns on and the float has free motion, you have put it back in correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Examine your sump pump each year to make sure that it is functioning properly.

  • Consider cleaning the sump pump once a year, as this will ensure that it continues to function properly. Dryer areas do not require an annual cleaning.

  • Failing to clean your sump pump could cause it to clog and stop working.

  • Never start working on a sump pump while it is connected to its power source. You could be electrocuted!

  • Never clean your pump while it is running or you are experiencing heavy rains. You may not be able to clean it fast enough, which would mean you could end up with water in your basement.
