How to Spot Symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome

Most people have heard of Toxic Shock Syndrome at one time or another but they may not realize the seriousness of the condition. Toxic Shock Syndrome is a serious bacterial infection that has been linked primarily to the use of tampons. Contraceptive devices, wounds and even surgical incisions have resulted in Toxic Shock Syndrome. It is a serious and potentially fatal condition that needs immediate medical attention. Every woman who uses tampons should be aware of the signs and symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome. Teenage girls should be given literature regarding the condition and/or a parent or relative should make sure they are aware of the dangers of Toxic Shock Syndrome. Early diagnosis is imperative in the treatment and recovery from Toxic Shock Syndrome, which is why it is important to know the signs of the condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Expect a sudden fever and chills with the onset of Toxic Shock Syndrome. The fever can climb rather high quickly. Fever is a common symptom of infection as the body attempts to fight off the infection.

    • 2

Notice whether there is vomiting and/or diarrhea. Both are symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome that may accompany high fever and chills as well as other symptoms.

    • 3

Observe whether a headache is present. Fainting may also occur. Headache may become severe. Dizziness may prelude the actual loss of consciousness if fainting occurs.

    • 4

Look for the appearance of a rash. The rash may appear anywhere on the body and tends to resemble a sunburn.

    • 5

Observe if there is weakness and/or mental confusion. A person afflicted with Toxic Shock Syndrome may suffer from extreme fatigue. The eyes may become bloodshot or rimmed by redness giving them a bloodshot appearance. There may also be a decrease in urination.

    • 6

Feel the skin. It may be cool, moist and clammy. There may be a rapid drop in blood pressure. The pulse becomes weak and rapid. The individual needs immediate hospitalization and emergency treatment since Toxic Shock Syndrome may be fatal if not treated with proper urgency. Left untreated a person suffering from Toxic Shock Syndrome may suffer from multiple organ failure and ultimately death. Don't wait. If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms seek medical attention early. Timely medical intervention can be the difference between life and death.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use super absorbent tampons since these have the highest rate of possible connection to Toxic Shock Syndrome.

  • Alternate between tampons and pads rather than continuously wearing tampons.

  • Wash your hands before and after changing tampons to prevent the spread of bacteria.
