Things You'll Need:
- apple cider vinegar or wine
- shallow bowl
- sand
- high or low pressure sodium lights
-
Step 1
One of the main things that attract gnats to your home are the outside lights, so first thing's first, make sure to replace outdoor bulbs with high pressure or low pressure sodium lights because these lights attract fewer gnats.
-
Step 2
The second most attractive thing to gnats is fruit left out on your counters, so when grocery shopping, be sure to wash all fruit thoroughly when you get it home, and throw it away promptly when it starts to become rotten.
-
Step 3
The third most attractive thing to gnats is houseplants. Be sure to inspect all plants in your home and remove rotten roots and leaves. You may need to report some plants if you find too much rotting. Also, once plants have been inspected and repotted if needed, I've found that a top dressing of sand (over the potting soil) will quickly ward off these pesky bugs. Also, doing this outside in your garden may help as well.
-
Step 4
Finally, take a shallow bowl filled with either apple cider vinegar or wine and place it next to anything that attracts gnats. (i.e. on the counter next to the fruit, next to your houseplants, beside the trash can)

on 7/9/2008 fungus gnats - the ones in house plants are attracted to the colour yellow, so yellow sticky fly paper works well to trap them - you can also get rid of them by adding a bit of vinegar to the water when you water them, or try letting the plant dry out as much as possible between waterings
