Clean Rusted Cymbols

If you literally have rusty cymbals then you really need this article. Often cymbals can get dirty and this build up can cause your cymbals to not only look dull, but not sound as good as they should. Follow my steps for easy cymbal maintenance that will keep them clean and sounding great!!!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cymbals that are dirty
  • A disposable cloth/towel
  • Cleaning Agent
  • Cymbol case
  1. Step 1

An important part of having any instrument sound great is keeping it maintained. This includes not only cleaning your cymbals but how they are stored, what your stands are like, and what kind of cleaners you use.

  2. Step 2
One case for all your cymbals!!!
One case for all your cymbals!!!

Keep your cymbals in a cymbal case when storing or moving them. This will not only keep them clean but will help them from getting dented which can alter the sound.

  3. Step 3

Make sure that when you do mount them on your cymbal stands, that they are a heavy quality stand that isn't going to fall over and damage your cymbals.

  4. Step 4

Also just as important as the stand, is the way you mount them to the stand. You should have felt circles on both sides of the cymbal to keep from damaging them.

  5. Step 5

Lastly cleaning your cymbals will require more than just wiping the dust off them once and a while. Cymbals have many different kinds of notches and grooves where dirt can build up over time. There is cleaners made specifically for cymbals and there is some household cleaners that can even work. I recommend going with a cleaner made for cymbals. This way you don't have to worry about eating the finish off of them. The kind in the picture, Groovejuice seems to work great. To clean your cymbals take them off the stand and simply spray and wipe them off. Make sure to use a towel or shirt that you don't mind throwing away afterwards. Then make sure to wipe them completely dry so they don't rust.

  6. Step 6

If your cymbals do have rust I recommend using a brass polish first. Then using the cymbal cleaner afterwards to get that desirable shine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to read the application directions on the cleaners you use so you don't accidentally damage your cymbals.

on 7/22/2008 Thanks for this article. Although I do not have a drum set yet, this is some good information to have when I do get a set. I've always wondered what to do if the cymbals get rusty.
