Changing the thermostat in your car is something you can do yourself. It does not require special tools when you remove the hose to access the thermostat. All it takes is a little know-how and some time.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the upper radiator hose when you prepare to remove the hose form the car thermostat. It should be just behind the radiator at the front of the car.

  2. Step 2

Pick up a pair of vise grips, and squeeze the clamp on the hose that's located just behind the radiator. Because the clamp is under permanent tension, you will need to squeeze the ends of the clamp before moving it. Slip the clamp back to loosen the hose as you prepare to remove the hose from the car thermostat.

  3. Step 3

Loosen the clamp on the radiator hose near the thermostat housing in the same method as Step 2.

  4. Step 4

Grasp the hose directly behind the radiator and wriggle it up and down as you slip it backward. Do the same with the hose behind the radiator. If you need to, you can slip a flat head screwdriver between the end of the hose and the thermostat housing to help you remove the hose from the car thermostat.

  5. Step 5

Twist the hose off from the thermostat housing. Keep both ends of the hose up as you lift it free from the engine so that no coolant pours out, then empty the hose's contents into a receptacle.
