You need to bunt the ball in softball, whether left-handed or right-handed, just right for a successful sacrifice or maneuver to get onto first base. Practicing the bunt over and over again will help ensure that you're successful.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Left Side Bunt in Softball

Step1
Get in the standard position as a batter at the plate, ready for the pitch.
Step2
Watch for the pitcher to go into a windup. Place the bat on your left shoulder and wait for the pitch to come across the plate.
Step3
Cross your left leg over toward the first base while showing the bunt simultaneously. The cross over step brings you toward first base before you make contact with the ball and bat.
Step4
Make contact with the ball and bat, drop the bat and run to first base.

Right Side Bunt in Softball

Step1
Get in the standard position as a batter at the plate, ready for the pitch.
Step2
Watch the wind up and start placing the bat on your right shoulder and wait for the pitch.
Step3
Pivot towards the pitcher with your shoulders squared as the pitch nears the plate.
Step4
Catch the ball with the bat before it crosses the plate, making sure it easily drops in play.
Step5
Drop the bat and run to first base.

Tips & Warnings

  • The hand on the handle of the bat controls where you want the bunt to go. If you hit the ball on the top of the leveled bat the ball pops up. Then, a player can catch the ball and you'll get a fly out. You want to bunt so the ball hits the ground easily and barely rolls in front of the plate.
  • The hand on the center of your bat gives the power to slow down the ball to bunt it so it lies on the ground barely moving, making the bunt harder to field.
