How to Kick in Muay Thai Boxing

Kicking in Muay Thai is a skill you must acquire and hone in order to effectively participate in competition. Unlike regular round house kicking, the Muay Thai kick utilizes the shin to strike the opponent, instead of the foot.

Instructions

    Front Kicking in Muay Thai Boxing

  1. Step 1

    Take a step forward with your front left, foot.

  2. Step 2

    Turn your hips and your torso to the left, pivoting on the ball of your left foot.

  3. Step 3

    Kick with a straight left leg, driving with your hips. Try to visualize driving your shin through your opponent as you "snap" your hip to put power behind the kick. Keep your balance by letting your right hand drop.

  4. Middle and Low Round Kicks

  5. Step 1

    Remember to protect your face when you're doing middle and low kicks in Muay Thai boxing. Your left hand should always protect your face.

  6. Step 2

    Push forward off the ball of your foot when you're doing low and middle round kicks in Muay Thai boxing.

  7. Step 3

    Twist the hips as you as do a low round house kick in Muay Thai boxing. Aim for the middle of your opponent's thigh.

  8. High Round Kick

  9. Step 1

    Do a high round kick in Muay Thai boxing. Remember to keep your hands up as you do so.

  10. Step 2

    Twist your hips to generate power behind the high round kick.

  11. Step 3

    Aim at your opponent's midsection or higher as you visualize aiming your shin through your opponent as you do a high round kick in Muay Thai kicking.
