When parents divorce, it's tough to adjust to your family living apart. If you have brothers and sisters, you may even feel responsible for taking care of them during this time. Know that other children who go through divorce make it out OK, and you will too. Remember that this is a hard time for your parents, too, and it's important to have communication between everyone so you can cope with the divorce.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remain calm. The divorce is not your fault. You did not cause the divorce. Your parents chose to get a divorce.

  2. Step 2

Cry as much as you need. It is good to cry and let your emotions out. Your crying will not change your parent's mind, but it's absolutely OK to cry.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your parents. Let your parents know that the divorce is upsetting you. Tell them how you really feel. If you find it hard to talk to your parents, then express yourself in other ways such as writing a diary for yourself or a letter to them.

  4. Step 4

Do something that you like to do. Doing things that you like to do will usually make you feel better and take your mind off the problem.

  5. Step 5

Seek professional help. If your depression is getting worse, you may want to go see a doctor or psychologist. Professional help is not anything to be embarrassed about, but something that is important to help you get through the situation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your parents will probably meet new people and that is OK. They will be happier when they meet new people.
  • Do not use violence to resolve this problem.
