How to Select a Modeling Agency

Modeling is a difficult industry full of disappointment, rejection, competition and pressure. So the last thing you need is a lousy agent. Thus the initial selection, interview and signing process is critical. But with so many people out there pretending to be legitimate, while really pulling a scam, how can you navigate the troubled waters and choose the right agent?

Instructions

    • 1

Look for lists of agencies online and in print publications such as the Ross Reports. Not all agencies represent all types so be sure to read the lists carefully as to what they represent and/or are currently looking for. Compile a list of all these potential agencies. Mark stars next to ones that are well known and respected, these will be your initial favorites.

    • 2

Send a cover letter and zed card or headshot to each potential agency. Try to make the cover letter out to the correct person in charge of the department you are applying to. Keep the cover letter short and to the point. Agents and their assistants don't have the time to sit and read a novel.

    • 3

Wait for phone calls from those who are interested in you. Set up meetings and accomodate your schedule to theirs when doing so. If you sit on the phone and try to schedule a meeting that will fit your schedule they just might hang up and never speak to you again. As a model you will be expected to be on call at all times. Think of this as your first test. When they give you a time and day you say thank you and hang up. The only exception is if you're having an emergency surgery, there's a graduation or wedding or you already have a meeting set up for that time.

    • 4

Get to your meetings at least fifteen minutes early. Being on time is a big deal in the entertainment industry. Arrive well groomed and put together. Your hair and make-up should be simple and clean. You should be dressed nicely and respectfully, no street walking clothes ladies. Take each meeting but don't commit to anyone while you are there. Tell them you are taking other meetings this week and would like to get back to them the following week.

    • 5

Ask lots of questions. Ask them what they see you doing, who they represent, how they would market you, what they expect from their clients and so on. After you have walked out of the meeting jot down a few notes about what was discussed, how you felt about the agent(s) and whether they said they would call you back or not. Once you have taken all your meetings and have a couple agents interested in you it's time to sit down and think.

    • 6

Compare the notes you took from the initial meetings. Who do you feel with promote you the best and push your career forward? Are they trustworthy? Do they have a good reputation? Get online and do some research. Go to model websites and read the forums. Ask other models if they've heard of them and if so, what they think. Make sure you are certain you know who you want then make the call. Set up a meeting to sign a contract and you're on your way.
