Many people forget about the hoop in a basketball game, even though it's one of the most important parts of the game. Players can't score without a rim. Instructions

1. Measure to determine that the rim is exactly 10 feet from the ground. A regulation NBA rim must be exactly this height to be official.

2. Check to ensure the rim breaks away. This means that the base of the rim houses a spring mechanism that allows it to bend forward. This device helps prevent the rim from shattering the backboard when dunked.

3. Test to ensure the hoop's circumference meets NBA regulations. Take two basketballs and see if they will fit through the rim at the same time. It will be a tight squeeze, but official NBA rims can do this.

4. Look at the net. The net should be white and made of thick material. Some cheaper rims have thin nets which will fray and rip quickly. Official NBA rims have high-quality thick nets.

5. Purchase only orange rims. While there are several color options, NBA rims only come in the familiar bright orange you see at the games.
