Natural disasters ranging from earthquakes to floods can force you and your family out of your home. As you search for shelter for the people you love, remember to consider your furry family members, too. You should have a rescue plan that includes a safe place for your pets to wait out any emergency. Avoid abandoning your pet and leaving him to fend for himself in a dangerous setting.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate a hotel in your area that accepts pets by accessing the website for Official Pet Hotels. Click on the your city or one near your home to see a list of hotels that offer lodging to you and your pet in the event of an emergency.

  2. Step 2

Contact your local chapter of the Humane Society of the United States to get information about emergency shelters that allow animals. Keep in mind that most emergency shelters, including Red Cross facilities, only accept families without pets due to safety and health concerns. The only animals accepted at these shelters are service animals.

  3. Step 3

Ask your veterinarian about emergency shelter for your pet. If your own veterinarian offers no emergency services for your pet, be prepared to ask several others until you find one willing to help in your area. Keep a 24-hour phone number available for an office that accepts pets in an emergency.

  4. Step 4

Search the Pets 911 website for a list of animal shelters and rescue organizations in your area. Inquire with these groups to see if they offer emergency shelter for your pet in a disaster. Keep in mind that these places may have enough to handle with the animals they shelter normally, and that a disaster may overwhelm their facilities.
