Pleasant breath makes a good impression. Bad breath is caused in part by bacteria growing in the plaque on the back of the tongue. Cleaning your tongue is a key step to having fresh breath. While gagging can be an issue for some, the benefits are well worth the unpleasantness. Clean your tongue frequently to become desensitized to the gag reflex and have the best results.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Tongue scraper
  • Water
  • Mouthwash
  1. Step 1

Brush your teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Gently clean your tongue with your toothbrush by scrubbing back and forth. Rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

  2. Step 2

Use a tongue scraper to remove the remaining white coating from your tongue. Place the tongue scraper on your tongue as far back as you can without gagging.

  3. Step 3

Apply a small amount of pressure to the tongue scrapper and pull it towards your lips. Apply just enough pressure to remove the white coating--not enough to cause any pain in your tongue.

  4. Step 4

Rinse the tongue scraper and repeat the scraping until no more residue is removed. Rinse with water and mouthwash after the scraping is complete.

  5. Step 5

Clean your tongue each time you brush your teeth. Slowly increase the frequency of your tongue cleaning if your tongue is sensitive to the cleanings at first. Fight bad breath when you keep your tongue as clean as your teeth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Seek help from a dental professional if bad breath persists even with frequent teeth brushing and tongue cleaning.
