Things You'll Need:

  • Sex education book
  1. Step 1

Buy an age-appropriate book that explains sex for your child. Read it before you give it to your child so that you're sure you agree with what the book says. Give the book to your child to read, or read it together.

  2. Step 2

Ask your child if she has any questions. In addition, ask your child if her friends ever talk about sex or their "private parts" and if she has any questions about what she has heard. Another child may have misinformed her, so this is your chance to clear up misconceptions.

  3. Step 3

Answer all of your child's questions honestly and truthfully. Try not to show embarrassment so that your child will feel more at ease. Use the clinical names for body parts instead of the cute nicknames. Using nicknames may make your child think that using real names is naughty or embarrassing.

  4. Step 4

Discuss safety issues with your child. While your son needs to understand that it's perfectly normal to touch his own private areas, he also needs to know that nobody else should touch him there. As young children become interested in this area, they may want to show it off. Therefore, you may also need to tell younger children that they shouldn't show their sexual parts to their friends.

  5. Step 5

Assure your child that if she ever has any more questions about sex, she can come to you for answers. Make sure she knows that you will always tell her the truth.
