How to Create a Whirlpool in a Swimming Pool

Practicing swimming strokes becomes a fun game when the end result is a whirlpool to float in. Moving water steadily around the outside edge of a pool eventually causes a depression in the center, creating the whirlpool reaction.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather some friends to join you in the pool. The whirlpool works best in a round pool--the smaller the better. If you swim alone, make sure there is one other person watching you in case of emergency.

  2. Step 2

Decide which swimming strokes you are going to practice and discuss it with your friends. Practice strokes that have you moving at similar speeds so you don't run over each other.

  3. Step 3

Figure out if you are going to swim in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction in the pool. Stand equal distances from each other and begin to swim in the direction chosen.

  4. Step 4

Swim as close to the edge as possible, and circle around many times. Encourage your friends to stay near the side, if you see them straying toward the center.

  5. Step 5

Play games with the swim strokes you are practicing by taking turns with your friends in calling out various stroke names. When the stroke is called, everyone should start doing it until someone calls a new one.

  6. Step 6

Float along with the whirlpool when it gets going fast enough for you. Or accept the new current as a challenge and swim in the opposite direction of the whirlpool. Try to swim against the current as you practice your swim strokes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always be aware of your water safety rules and have someone watching you while you make your whirlpool.
  • Although you can make a whirlpool with one person, the more people you have swimming, the faster you can create a whirlpool.
