Although a car's value depreciates as soon as it is titled, there are many things you can do to increase its resale value. Here's how to protect your investment without spending a lot of money.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Park away from other vehicles to avoid getting your car scratched. Keeping the body in good condition will increase the car's value when it's time to resell it.

  2. Step 2

Keep up with all maintenance to prevent engine or transmission damage. A smooth, quiet, running vehicle is worth more than one with an engine making knocking noises.

  3. Step 3

Detail the engine to increase the resale value. Apply an engine degreaser to cut grease, allow it to soak for about 3 to 5 minutes and spray the engine with a power washer.

  4. Step 4

Spray a rubber or vinyl conditioner, like Armor All, on all rubber and vinyl parts in the engine compartment. Wipe it off with a rag. It keeps hoses from becoming brittle and adds shine. Use it to clean the tires, dashboard, side panels and the steering wheel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take note of the dealer's inventory if you're thinking of trading in your car. For example, if you have a white Toyota and the dealer has several white Toyotas on the lot, you may not receive a good offer.
  • Consider trading in your car toward the end of the month. You may receive a better offer since dealers are often trying to meet a quota.
