If you find alcoholic drinks and the various ways to mix them interesting, then a job in bartending might be for you. Bartenders usually get a great deal of tips and the job is fast paced and high energy. Follow these steps to get a bartending job.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice mixing drinks at your home. You can look on the Internet or in books for recipes and tips. Try making some new drinks that nobody has tried before. Strong knowledge of alcoholic products and mixed drinks will impress a potential employer.

  2. Step 2

Learn about the history of liquor and other drinks such as wine and beer. Educate yourself about the history of some of the classic mixed drinks, such as the Margarita, Pina Colada and the Bloody Mary. When you go to an interview, your potential employer will ask you questions to get a feeling for your knowledge.

  3. Step 3

Meet the owners and employees of the businesses at which you would be interested in working. Become a customer, but don't drink too much or be a pest while you're there. Hang out at the bar a bit and find out who owns the place. Make a point to introduce yourself to everyone who works at the bar; be friendly and respectful.

  4. Step 4

Write a great resume. Your resume should outline any previous experience you have in similar fields, such as waitressing and customer service. Remember to mention that your hobby is learning about new mixed drinks and learning how to make them yourself.

  5. Step 5

Look for ads in your local newspaper for bartending job openings. If you find any, apply for those. Next, contact the other businesses at which you would like to work and ask if you could bring your resume by for future reference.

  6. Step 6

Dress in the same sort of outfit that you would wear while bartending. Showing up to an interview for a bartending job in a suit would be silly. Likewise, you shouldn't be too underdressed either; make the effort to look good.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you seem to have a hard time getting a job as a bartender, go ahead and accept a lower position in the business. You will soon have an opportunity to move up into the position you want.
