Step 1
Go to a beauty supply store. These stores generally have a much wider selection of hair dyes than discount or drug stores. This means that you can find more dyes that will be gentler on your hair as well as a wider selection of shades. In beauty supply stores, the dyes often have to be purchased separately from the developer and the mixing bottle. Consult a salesperson to make sure you buy all of the ingredients necessary.

Step 2
Look for dyes that are easiest on your hair. They should be free of ammonia which can damage the hair. Look for dyes that use plant and vegetable dyes. These will be the gentlest on the hair.

Step 3
Shop for hair dye in a grocery store or drug store if a beauty supply store is not available. In these stores, look for the higher-end dyes to avoid damage to the hair. Many of the cheapest brands rely on ammonia and other harsh ingredients. The higher-end brands that are available in these stores, such as Feria, are both gentler to the hair and longer-lasting. Price is often a useful indicator as to the quality of these dyes.

Step 4
Find a dye that is for your hair type. There are hair dyes that are specifically made for African-American hair and others that are made for Caucasian or Asian hair. Look for dyes that are formulated for your hair's texture in order to get a dye that will be effective.
