1
Purchase a canvas duffel bag from the local army navy store. You want the tubular kind with rings and rope fasteners at the open end.
-
2
Scotchguard the duffel bag to minimize sweat stains. Follow the instructions on the back of the product and allow the fabric to dry.

3
Line the inside of the bag with thick plastic. This will keep the filler and padding in place and prevent moisture from reaching the sand. Use a plastic bag that is big enough to line the entire duffel bag.
-
4
Pad the inside of the duffel bag with upholstery foam evenly. Keep the center of bag open for filling.
-
5
Secure the padded duffel bag in an upright position and pour sand inside. Fill the center of the bag until the sand pushes the foam out to the sides as far as they can go.
-
6
Secure the inner contents of the punching bag by sealing the plastic liner at the top and tying the duffel bag ropes tightly together.
-
7
Attach a heavy chain to the metal rings of the duffel bag so that the rings are spaced evenly apart. If the duffel bag does not have metal rings, carabiners will work. Hang the bag from the ceiling at a height that is suitable for you.
