If you want to go to a Halloween party dressed as a teen from the 1950s, a flared poodle skirt is a must. Although you may be able to buy one at a flea market or sew one yourself, use these tips to make a no-sew poodle skirt that will look just as convincing as the real thing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pink circle skirt
  • Clip art
  • Scrap paper
  • Pencil
  • Straight pins
  • Black felt
  • Scissors
  • Velcro
  • Fabric glue
  • Ribbon or string
  • Sequins or buttons
  1. Step 1

Get a plain pink circle skirt that reaches mid-calf or longer. If you don't have one, see if the local dance apparel store carries long "character skirts" in pink.

  2. Step 2

Download a free silhouette of a poodle's body from a clip art website and print it onto a piece of scrap paper or card stock (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Cut out the pattern and affix it to a piece of black felt with pins or temporary adhesive. Cut around the shape to create a black felt poodle.

  4. Step 4

Back the poodle and the area where you'd like to attach it to your skirt with self-adhesive Velcro strips or dots. If you don't mind adding the accents to the skirt permanently, you can use fabric glue. Place a piece of cardboard inside the skirt so the adhesive doesn't seep through to the other side (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Glue sequins, small buttons or pieces of faux fur to your poodle. Create a leash and collar for the dog with ribbon. If you must remove the decorations later, use small Velcro dots to add the ribbon to your skirt.

  6. Step 6

Complete the look by wearing a crinoline or several slips beneath the skirt for fullness. Pair the skirt with a fitted, short-sleeved black or white buttondown shirt with a pink scarf tied around your neck. You can also wear your hair in a high ponytail with a similar scarf tied around it, a pair of white tennis or saddle shoes and horned-rimmed glasses.
