If you like science experiments and want to use one for your own entertainment, you can launch a rocket constructed from items you can gather around the house. For an extra boost, you should construct this "motor" before you head out to the launching pad. Gather the materials in a safe area and lay everything out before you begin to work.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 15 to 20 wooden matches
  • Small container
  • Scissors
  • Spoon
  • Tinfoil
  • Fuse
Step1
Take a match in one hand and scrape the head carefully with the sharp edge of a knife or scissors to remove the match powder. Work slowly so you don't splinter the wood. Repeat until all of the matches are done
Step2
Grind the match powder with a tablespoon in a bowl, or use a mortar and pestle. Continue grinding the powder until it is extra fine.
Step3
Cut a piece of tinfoil 2-inches wide and 8-inches long. Curve one end of the foil up slightly. Pour the powder from the matches into the curved end of the tinfoil and level the power with your finger.
Step4
Place your fuse across the tinfoil, over the powder, and roll the foil up for five rotations. Snip off any excess foil and twist the top end tightly to create a seal.
Step5
Attach the foil to a small object, such as a toy car or plane, with tape and light the fuse. Make sure there aren't any people, animals or breakable objects in the rocket's path. Stand out of the way and watch the rocket lift off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use caution when working with flammable items.
