While many coffee connoisseurs turn their noses up at quick and convenient instant coffee, those powders or crystals can make brewing a cup of java a breeze. Instant coffees have a reputation for being bitter, but that doesn't have to be the case if you know how to make a cup.

From Quick Guide: Coffee Break
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Instant coffee
  • Fresh water
  • Kettle
  • Mug
  • Hot water
  • Milk
  • Brown sugar
  • Spoon
  1. Step 1

Put some fresh, clean water in a kettle to boil. Run your mug under hot water, warming it thoroughly and then dry the outsides.

  2. Step 2

Pour your milk into the warm mug before adding anything else. Adding milk to hot coffee can scald the milk and change the flavor.

  3. Step 3

Spoon in brown sugar if you like your coffee sweet. Brown sugar cuts the bitterness of the instant coffee. Once you have added sugar, add a spoonful of instant coffee to the milk and stir until the sugar and coffee are dissolved.

  4. Step 4

Fill the mug with boiling water, stir and enjoy a good cup of instant coffee.

Tips & Warnings
  • Instant coffee is far stronger than regular coffee, so generally 1 tsp. is all you need. When in doubt, start with a smaller amount and add more if necessary.
