Things You'll Need:
- Scissors
- Paper bags
- Masking tape
- Measuring tape
- Zipper with adjustable stoppers
- Duct tape
- Pliers
- Needle and thread
-
Step 1
Cut open one or more paper bags to make your skirt template. If you need more than one bag to wrap around your body, simply join them with masking tape. Wrap the paper around your waist and secure the edges with tape when you get the correct fit.
-
Step 2
Recruit a friend to carefully mark the waistband and bottom hem, making sure the lines are straight and even. Mark the hems with a long strip of masking tape, beginning at the back center of the skirt and wrapping around the front. Take a look in the mirror and adjust the tape.
-
Step 3
Check your hems and skirt shape, and then place another piece of masking tape from the top of the skirt to the bottom hem just over the front of one thigh. This is where you will place the zipper. Remove the paper template by cutting up the center of the masking tape in line with the mark for your zipper.
-
Step 4
Measure the location of the zipper, from the top to bottom edges. Find a zipper at a craft or fabric store that is slightly longer than your measurement.
-
Step 5
Start taping on the upper edge of the zipper location, placing only half of the duct tape along the edge, and then folding it over to create a smooth edge. Repeat on the bottom edge.
-
Step 6
Begin wrapping your skirt in duct tape. Wrap the tape horizontally across your body. Cover the front of the skirt first and wrap the excess tape over the edges. Once the entire front of the skirt is covered, fill in the inside of the skirt with tape.
-
Step 7
Use a pair of pliers to remove the zipper stoppers at the top of the zipper. Cut your zipper to size and replace the stoppers. Make sure the zipper is zipped to the top and place a length of duct tape evenly along the fabric. Place the zipper onto the edge of your skirt, sticking the excess tape onto the edge of the skirt and overlap the edges. Repeat with the other side of the zipper, and then make sure it's secure by using a needle and thread to hand stitch down the length of each side of the zipper.
