How to Make a Diet Coke and Mentos Rocket

The Diet Coke and Mentos rocket trick is not new, and it can be messy and difficult to launch successfully. However, watching your rocket soar up through the clouds and deep into the scrolling sky above will make the experience worth the trouble.

Things You'll Need:

• 16-oz bottle Diet Coke
• Mentos
• Wine bottle cork

1. Open the package of Mentos carefully, without ripping the foil. Slightly crush each candy just enough so that the inner core is exposed. Place the candy back into the foil wrapper.

2. Prepare a rocket launcher, or a small stand that can support your bottle. Dig a hole in the ground or use a small box. You also can cut the top from a large bleach bottle, place rocks in the bottom and place your unopened Diet Coke and Mentos inside.

3. Set up your rocket. Unscrew the cap of the coke bottle and drop the crushed Mentos, still wrapped in foil, into the bottle. Insert a wine bottle cork. Do not shake the bottle. Turn it cork side down and rest it in the rocket launcher. Quickly step away.

4. Watch for a few seconds as the pressure builds, blows the cork and sends your diet coke rocket high into the air. Be prepared for the sticky mess.

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure that you use Diet Coke, not regular Coke, as the reaction tends to be a lot stronger.
• Make sure that you set your rocket off outside, away from windows, vehicles and people.
