How to Lock Windows XP
You have a job or task to take care of and don't want to shut the computer down, but you also don't want anyone to see what you are working on. So, you need to know how to lock the computer so no one can gain access. Windows XP has a double set of lock outs available.

Open your Control Panel and locate the "Display" icon. Double click the Display icon and select the Screen Saver tab. Select the screen saver you want to use. Check the box that says "On Resume, Password Protect." When the screen saver turns on it will require the password to get it to shut off. This is the first level of locking down the computer.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del before you leave the computer. Choose the "Lock Computer" option. This will put the Windows Login screen on the display. You will not be able to get back on without the Account password to log back in.

Leave the computer for as long as you like and rest assured that no one will be able to get onto your computer to mess around with information or see what you have been doing.

Return to the computer and move the mouse or press any key. The computer prompts you to enter the password. Once you have gained access you will again be asked to login because the computer has been locked. Enter your login password and you will have control of the computer again.
