Step 1
Give the object a small push. This helps you determine how heavy it is. If you can't push it, chances are, you can't lift it. In addition, remember that large objects may be lighter than smaller objects.
-
Step 2
Secure moveable objects or things that may shift as you pick up the heavy object. Use plastic or simple tape if you need to. If possible, remove them to make the object a little lighter and come back for them in a second trip.
-
Step 3
Test your grips. Make sure the grips aren't going to fall apart when you lift the object. In addition, make sure your grips aren't going to dig into your hands and arms and cause bruises or injury. You're more likely to suddenly drop the heavy object if it's hurting your hands and arms.
-
Step 4
Move the object closer to you. Try to avoid stretching if the object is far away. Use ladders if the object is taller than you are or you have to lift your arms to grab it. In addition, avoid twisting when you pick up the object or when you're carrying it.

Step 5
Make sure you know where the object is going to go and the place is clear.
