Training your cat to be comfortable on the leash doesn't have to be a chore. To leash train your cat effectively, make training time fun for your cat and remain consistent in your training methods. By staying consistent, you teach the cat what behaviors to expect from you, and what you expect from your cat.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set aside a specific training time each day. This is the time you work specifically with your cat to train the leash or other behaviors, like responding to its name. Tailor the training time to the attention span of your cat. If you try to train a playful kitten for hours on end, you'll both be frustrated and your results will likely be poor.

  2. Step 2

Incorporate fun in your training time. Work on training issues for a few minutes, then introduce play. The more your cat enjoys being trained, the more successful training will be.

  3. Step 3

Place the leash on the cat and let the leash be. Don't hold on to it or try to direct your cat. Let the cat become accustomed to wearing the leash and how it feels. Play with the cat and offer treats so the leash is associated with good things.

  4. Step 4

Increase the amount of time you hold the leash while it's attached to the cat. Do this very slowly, and always while playing with the cat or when providing praise and treats.

  5. Step 5

Walk your cat on the leash around your home. Don't pull or tug the cat if he balks at the pressure of the leash. Remain still and patient as you let your cat get accustomed to the leash. Be generous with your praise and treats.

  6. Step 6

Slowly introduce new areas to your cat through the course of your leash training. Go to the back yard, the front porch and then venture out into your neighborhood. Never force your cat to go where she's not comfortable.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always walk a cat with a body harness. Never attach a leash to its neck collar, as this can strangle your cat if he becomes frightened or tangled.
  • Only move forward with training as your cat is comfortable. A frightened animal is not trainable, and you want to make sure your cat feels safe.
