Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Begin your research with a reference book on essential oils (see Resources below). A quality reference book should give you an idea what particular oils can be used for babies as well as their safety for use with babies. While quality reference guides are often expensive, they can be used for a lifetime to keep you and your family healthy and safe.
Step2
Discuss the use of essential oils with your pediatrician, as aromatherapy and remedies made with essential oils are an important part of your baby's health care and your doctor should be aware of all treatments. Additionally, your pediatrician can help you decide when using essential oil for babies is appropriate and when a more traditional approach may be a better and safer solution.
Step3
Talk to an aromatherapist about the safety of essential oils and use with babies. Not only will an aromatherapist have a wealth of information about what to use and how, they can help you to select the perfect oils or combinations of oils, dilutions and offer recipes for home remedies.
Step4
Consider a naturopath for your child's health care needs instead of, or in addition to, a traditional pediatrician, particularly if you would like to include natural medicine such as essential oils as part of your regular health care routine. A naturopath may be your best resource of all, as they have extensive medical training which includes holistic and traditional therapies. Not only can a naturopath help you to determine essential oil safety, he can include oils as part of your baby's regular health care plan for both treatment and prevention.
Step5
Know what you are looking for when you go shopping for your essential oils. From your chosen reference or resources, you should know what oil you are looking for as well as the strength. Also, ask a professional working at the store where you buy your oils about brands and different types of oils.
