Step 1
Consider the room or space for the carpet. The carpet should be functional, decorative and complement the room and its furnishings. The factors to consider are size, color, style, design, pattern and room usage and lighting. Install light colored carpets in low traffic areas of your home and avoid having carpets where there is direct sunlight.
-
Step 2
Understand the different types, grades and textures of wool carpets available. You can choose from hand made to machine made varieties, 100% wool carpets or a wool/synthetic blend. Understand the face weight (actual amount of wool in the carpet), performance rating (measure of durability) and know its place of origin (Middle East or Far East) when choosing a good quality carpet.
-
Step 3
Know the many benefits of a wool carpet. Wool carpets provide good performance, thermal insulation and noise reduction. It is also natural, durable, soil and stain resistant, fire retardant, recyclable and is a good investment (see Resources). Compared to other types of carpets, it may be a good value for the money invested.
-
Step 4
Buy a wool carpet within your planned budget. You should decide how much you are willing to spend on your new carpet. Depending on factors like the quality, materials, size and dyes, prices vary between the lower end of $100+ to the higher end of $10,000+.
-
Step 5
Look for reputable rug dealers and visit many showrooms once you have done your research and know what you want. The sales personnel should be able to answer all your questions. Ask about the carpet's maintenance, installation, warranty and lifespan, certificate of authenticity (for high quality carpets) or return policy before buying it. Try to get a sample and see if it looks good in the room you plan to install the carpet.
-
Step 6
Get your room measured by the dealer to insure a proper fit before installation. This service may be provided by some dealers. There are many dealers that sell good quality carpets (see Resources).
-
Step 7
Install the wool carpet and be sure to maintain and clean it properly. To prevent damage to handmade high quality wool carpets, avoid steam cleaning and dry- clean.
