How to Troubleshoot a Well Water Submersible Pump

When you have a well and the water is moving slowly, you may suspect that the pump has gone awry. If the well pump goes bad, it means costly repairs, possible replacement and of course, no water until the problem is remedied. Here's how to troubleshoot a well water submersible pump so that you know exactly what is wrong. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the power supply. Check the breaker box and flip the breaker. If you have water, then you solved the problem. It sounds simple enough, but if you don't check this first, you will waste a lot of time looking for other problems.

    • 2

Get a voltmeter and check the power lines that come into the pump. This checks the circuit for connectivity. You will find these lines coming into the breaker box. Also check the voltage on the pressure switch as well, which is in a default closed position.

    • 3

Check if the pump is running. If you hear it running constantly, or hear it short cycling, which is when it turns on and off quickly, then turn off the power to it. These conditions cause the pump's motor to burn out quickly and can kill even a brand new pump.

    • 4

Change the pressure settings on the tank gauge. If the turn on and shut off pressure settings on the tank are not set properly, they may need adjustment.

    • 5

Fill the tank with an air compressor. Your tank may be the problem instead of the pump. The bladder requires air in it to function properly so your pump does not short cycle.

    • 6

Stop using water for a while, especially if your town has a water advisory or if you used a lot of water. It could be that your well has run dry. Stop running the washer or showers, and minimize toilet flushes for a few hours or as long as an entire day. Keep the power to the pump off. Note whether the pump works when you turn everything back on.
