How to Replace a Tub-Spout Diverter Valve
The plunger in the spout at the bottom of your tub is not staying up and you don't know what to do. You desperately want to take a shower, but holding the valve closed with your foot is getting old, and besides, you could slip and fall. Here is how to change that tub-spout diverter valve so you have both feet free to enjoy dancing in your shower again.

Loosen and remove any caulking from around the tub spout with a putty knife. Be careful not to scratch the tile or tub surround material.

Unscrew the tub spout from the threaded pipe. In plumbing terms this threaded pipe is the "nipple." If you have trouble loosening it, try some WD-40 on the threads.

Take this to your home improvement center to get an exact match in pipe diameter. Make sure you match plumbing metals, for instance if you have plastic pipe, don't get a copper based tub-spout valve assembly. P

Wrap Teflon tape around the threaded "nipple" on your spout plumbing. Directly off the roll, spin a few layers of Teflon tape around the threads. Be sure to cover all threads and try not to get any outside of this area. This ensures that the new tub-spout diverter valve assembly does not leak.

Screw on the new spout and caulk around the new spout at the base.
