Coquille paper has a textured, pebbled surface. It's not used as often as other versions of artist's paper and is harder to find. Drawing a portrait on coquille paper is similar to drawing a portrait on any other paper, but the texture makes it easier to blend tones and shading.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Easel
  • Coquille paper
  • Carbon and graphite pencils
  • Edged eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
  • White paint
  1. Step 1

Set up a large easel so that you can use both hands to measure and sketch.

  2. Step 2

Measure the height and width of the subject's head with the length of your pencil. Transfer the measurements to your paper. Draw the general shape of the head within those markings.

  3. Step 3

Divide the face into three parts. The first part is where the eyebrows go. Next is the nose, and the bottom is the chin.

  4. Step 4

Draw an imaginary line down the center of the face. Measure the position of the eyes and corners of the nose, mouth and ears against this line.

  5. Step 5

Sketch in the general facial features according to the horizontal and vertical measurements. Draw curves as straight lines with a firm but light touch. Adjust and fill them out later.

  6. Step 6

Find the patterns of shadows and light on your subject. Sketch them onto the paper.

  7. Step 7

Create a dark space around the subject to make the subject pop into the foreground. Shade the areas with sharpened carbon and graphite pencils. Build up the shadow and contrast in stages. Define the edges with a sharpened edged eraser. Apply white paint to define sharp, light highlights.
