How to Do Meditation in Martial Arts

Meditation is a process of martial arts that relaxes the mind, body and soul. It prepares you for engaging your body in physical activity, specifically combat. It is used in martial arts because it prepares the mind and body to react rather than anticipate. It quiets the mind from its ongoing thinking and processing of the days events and allows the mind to just be. The process of meditation is easy and can help relieve stress as well as prepare you to perform martial arts.

Instructions

  1. How to Sit

    • 1

Sit with your legs folded, your back straight and your head high.

    • 2

Keep your eyes half-open, looking down at about 45 degrees and relaxed.

    • 3

Cup your left hand in your right, touch your thumbs lightly to form a small circle and rest your arms on your thighs.

    • 4

Face a wall to minimize visual distractions.

    Where to Meditate

    • 5

Choose a quiet room without a lot of visual, sound or odor distractions. Make sure it is free of interruptions.

    • 6

Keep the temperature at a comfortable level so the room is not too hot or too cold.

    • 7

Avoid moving. Once you are relaxed enough, you will be able to sit still comfortably without feeling the need to move.

    Meditate

    • 8

      Relax in your seated position.

    • 9

Release any thoughts or agitations that enter your mind.

Breathe in deeply and slowly, expanding your abdominal muscles outward. Breathe out slowly and relax your abdomen.
