The portable thickness planer is an indispensable tool for the modern woodworker. This intricate device trims down a board's thickness until it reaches perfection. The most alluring part of this machine is how quickly and easily a planer does the job.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Measure the board you want to trim and remeasure the project you are working on. Like most woodworking, you must know the precise measurements before beginning in order to avoid costly mistakes.

  2. Step 2

Set the deck of the planer for your desired thickness. Do this by trying to send the board through the planer without the machine turned on. If the board cannot pass, raise the deck until it passes freely. If the planer is set too high, adjust the deck down until it nearly touches the board.

  3. Step 3

Flip the safety switch and turn the planer on. Be sure there are no hands or boards in the area of the planer when it begins. Do not adjust the height to the exact thickness you need. Instead, set it well above the thickness. It will take several passes before the board is ready. This will prevent chipping and breakage of your board.

  4. Step 4

Send the board through the planer and remove it from the opposite end. Turn the deck crank a quarter turn down and send the board through again. Repeat this step until you have trimmed away enough wood that your board is at its desired thickness.

  5. Step 5

Turn the machine off and safely unplug it.
